Beguiling Dreams

Beguiling Dreams (tracks 1–4) was born out of a period of profound personal loss following the death of my nephew Jordan. His courage and selflessness in attempting to save the life of his best friend remain an enduring part of his memory. For six months, I stopped playing the piano. I did not touch a keyboard: it was the longest such silence of my life.

When I finally returned to the piano, I did so without any preconceived musical plan. What followed was approximately twenty-two uninterrupted minutes of music, recorded without editing. Melodies, harmonies, and larger musical structures seemed to emerge instinctively, almost as a single continuous musical thought. It was an experience I have never been able to reproduce in quite the same way.

I originally described this process as improvisation, and in the literal sense it was: the music was created in the moment rather than written down beforehand. Yet the word alone can be misleading. This was not casual or unstructured improvising. What emerged spontaneously was grounded in a lifetime spent as a classically trained composer. There were years of shaping melody, harmony, form and musical architecture, traditionally with pencil and manuscript paper in hand. For that reason, I have come to think of the process more accurately as spontaneous composition: music conceived and performed simultaneously yet created by decades of compositional experience.

Beguiling Dreams grew from that extraordinary moment — an unrepeatable recording shaped by memory, imagination, and the enduring presence of someone deeply loved.

In collaboration with producer and arranger Shael Riley (tracks 5–11), Suno AI was used as a digital production tool — not a one-click process.

The resulting orchestrations required considerable time, musical judgment, experimentation, selection, refinement, and final shaping. Shael Riley transformed Luckman’s original composition into a richly orchestrated instrumental world.
